The Biotechnology Alliance for Suncoast Biology Educators (BASBE) is a community of science educators and support partners.  We are K-12 teachers, college professors, curriculum specialists, scientists, entrepreneurs, and business people.

Who we are

What we do

We encourage high school students to consider careers in science or teaching science.

We improve the overall quality of science education in local secondary schools to better prepare high school graduates to succeed in college science courses.

How we do it

Community Network

We provide a forum where K12 teachers collaborate with college professors to form ongoing partnerships that enable continuity of instruction for science students as they transition from high school to college.

The “Lab-in-a-Box” loaner program provides all of the equipment, protocols, and support needed to empower K12 teachers to incorporate an interactive unit of technologically current investigative science into their curricula. The loaner program currently includes a lab on DNA fingerprinting and a lab on bacterial transformation available to current participating teachers in Manatee and Sarasota County School Districts.

The BASBE website allows members to share educational materials.  Educators freely exchange lesson plans, protocols, technique tips, teaching strategies, and other materials that they have developed and used in their classrooms. BASBE site users provide direct feedback on materials leading to ongoing improvements in site content.
